
This course aims to provide investigation into the rationale for Modified Barium Swallow Studies as well as Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow in the pediatric population. This course will highlight the differences between the two types of studies, overview of anatomy, common challenges encountered, set up for the studies, techniques for completing the studies, and recommendations following the studies. This course will also include real life case studies to further solidify the concepts addressed.
MEET OUR PRESENTER:Â
Christina is a speech-language pathologist specializing in neonatal therapy and pediatric feeding and is a Certified Neonatal Therapist. Christina currently works in a Level 1 trauma center with patients across the lifespan, primarily working in the hospital’s Level III NICU and outpatient clinic with pediatric feeding patients. In addition, Christina completes Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow with patients of all ages, ranging from neonatal and pediatric through adults, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Prior to Christina’s current position, she worked at a Pediatric Rehabilitation Hospital with patients ages 0-21. She was part of a team to develop an Infant Feeding Program for infants to transition from the NICU to the rehabilitation setting in order to continue working on feeding. Christina is passionate about all areas of neonatal and pediatric feeding, striving to continue learning and growing as a clinician, as well as sharing her experiences with other professionals.

TIME ORDERED AGENDA & LEARNINGÂ OBJECTIVES
0-30 minutes:Â Rationale for instrumental evaluations of swallow - Participants will be able to choose the appropriate instrumental evaluation of swallow based on clinical symptoms and overall clinical picture.
31-90Â minutes:Â MBSS/VFSS - Participants will be able to differentiate anatomy between infants, children, and adults for MBSS/VFSS, formulate explanation of recommendation for MBSS/VFSS to parents, caregivers, and medical team members, modify trials and presentation of trials to meet the needs of the child, create appropriate recommendations for ongoing therapy, and develop appropriate referrals to other specialists following MBSS/VFSS.
91-150 minutes: FEES - Participants will be able to differentiate anatomy between infants, children, and adults for FEES, formulate explanation of recommendation for FEES to parents, caregivers, and medical team members, modify trials and presentation of trials to meet the needs of the child, create appropriate recommendations for ongoing therapy, and develop appropriate referrals to other specialists following FEES. Â
151-180 minutes:Â Case studies - participants will have the opportunity to analyze case studies of real life scenarios with pediatric MBSS/VFSS and FEES in order to apply the knowledge presented in this course.

- Choose the appropriate instrumental evaluation of swallow based off patient/client clinical symptoms of dysphagia
- Differentiate anatomy between infants, toddlers, and adults in relation to VFSS and FEES

- Modify trials and presentation of trials during VFSS or FEES
- Create appropriate recommendations for ongoing dysphagia and feeding therapy following VFSS or FEES
