"Airway Orthodontics and Why Retraction is Bad"

CONTINUING EDUCATION REGISTRATION PAGE

WEBINAR DATE: March 5, 7:00- 9:00PM ET

(2 Hours, 0.20 ASHA CEUs)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Some who are well-known in the orthodontic world call "airway orthodontics" snake oil. Whether you agree, are unsure, or have decided that "airway orthodontics" has some truth behind the concept, this course will help you understand what it is, and what it is not. Your orthodontic paradigm may, in part or whole, come into question as Dr. Hockel's did in 2005. This presentation will aim to pass on some of the concepts of airway orthodontics and the practical knowledge gained since then. It will include case presentations to show in specific examples how patients can be served with treatments that are nearly the exact opposite of what we were taught - yet the argument for them is compelling. Spoiler alert: airway orthodontics includes much more than MARPE, and should always avoid retraction.

PRESENTER: Brian Hockel, DDS

Dr. Hockel limits his orthodontic treatments to those which are therapeutic toward and/or protective of the airway. A GP since 1989, he practiced functional (retractive) orthodontics and various types of expansion for several years. Dr. Hockel now goes beyond common expansion approaches to non-retractive orthodontics, forward mechanics and treatments, growth guidance, collaboration with supporting non-dental disciplines, and therapies to actively help patients with breathing-related sleep disorders, UARS and OSA. He has taught the Airway Orthodontics Mini-Residency, as well as courses on diagnostics and records, Crozat orthopedics, and fixed appliances through the Academy of Airway and Gnathologic Orthopedics (www.aago.com). He is a board member of the AAGO and the North American Association for Facial Orthotropics (NAAFO), and he teaches hands-on orthodontics for the ECHO mentorship by William Hang, DDS, on Early Childhood Health-Centered Orthodontics. Dr. Hockel lives in Walnut Creek, California, with his wife Beth and varying numbers of their eleven children.
